Do they render in eevee?
yes, the setup is specifically designed to work in eevee and cycles.
is it for explosions only?
Primalrily yes, but with the right colors and timing the shaders can achieve very magical fantasylike smoke effects.
the tendrils of the bomb, for example, can be adjusted to shape a plant, which fades to dust when animated... it would be an exaggeration to say the possibilites are endless, but there is definitely room to play.
