I'm environment artist working in game industry for several years professionally on AAA projects.
I noticed that Blender lacks decent exporting tool that allows artist to have several assets and asset variations as well as LODs in the same scene. Also, exporting process is very tedious with standard File->Export->FBX pipeline so I figured that I might do something about that. And since I have programming background it was natural thing to do for me.
I don't know about other modelling fields (I imagine that it could be useful too), but in gamedev we work with A LOT of assets and LODs and it's often necessary to manage them in one scene.
