Antique Roll-Top Desk

by Ed Ackerman in Models

Description:

This is a model of a late Victorian / Edwardian roll top office or writing desk which features an S-shaped tambour front.  This tambour front can be rolled back to reveal pigeon holes, pen trays and drawers.  The desk is supported by a twin pedestal base with center drawer. Each pedestal side has four drawers and a slide for extra working surface.  Each of the drawers has a carved handle.  All of the drawers and slides can be opened or closed as desired.  A desk of this type would have been made circa 1900.

Usage:

The model is contained in a single .blend file with all textures/images/materials packed inside.  To use it, you can append it into your scene as follows:

Go to the File Menu and pull down to Append

Find the Antique_Rolltop_Desk.blend file and double-click on it.

Double Click on the Collection icon

Select the “Append_Rolltop_Desk” collection and click Append

Note that the model components are all parented to a master Empty Item represented by the large labeled axis.  You can move or rotate this Empty Item to adjust the location and orientation of the model.  The roll-top or “tambour” is parented to an Empty Item represented by a wire-frame sphere in front of the keyhole. To open or close the roll-top, select this sphere, and press G, and then Z and move your mouse up or down.  In a similar manner, each of the drawers and sliders can be opened by selecting the corresponding wire-frame sphere Empty Item and pressing G and then moving your mouse. Constraints prevent movement in any direction other than in or out.

The antique roll-top desk was modeled in Blender 3.4.1 and utilizes PBR shaders with some procedural color adjustment.  Materials work in both Cycles and Eevee.  If you are rendering in Eevee, enable Ambient Occlusion in the Render Properties panel and adjust the parameters to your liking.
